Coffee Date Dress

I finally made a coffee date dress (the pattern is available as a free download here on burda style, or here on the creator, the selfish seamstress's blog. Kathleen from grosgrain has also done an awesome Frock-by-Friday using this pattern, breaking it into manageable bits on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).

I have to say that although this is a cute pattern, I had troubles with it. And it's not the fault of the pattern, it's the fault of me.

Firstly, I changed the bodice from darts to a princess seam. Because darts and me don't get along - they end up weird and pointy, and most importantly, nowhere near where my nipples are. And, a few of the photos of the dress made up seemed to have this problem. I made a quick shell of the bodice, and it seemed to fit alright around the bust, but because I hadn't added a skirt, I didn't check the fit of the waist. This was my biggest mistake.

So, I made the dress up, changing the centre back zip to a side zip. Which is mostly fine, but means that the dress is almost totally made up before I tried it on. And, for some reason, rather than overlock each of the edges individually as I usually do, I decided to overlock seams together. So, when I tried the dress on and realised that the waist was much too big for me, I not only had to take it in, but also to deal with overlocked-together-seams.

And it looked really bad. Like a 60s shift gone wrong (okay, that's because of the sleeves I put in, the bell shape plus the pleats at the top make it look like that), but not wearable like it was.

Slightly more redeemable with a belt, but did weird puffy things, and I don't really like wearing belts

And, because I had put in the side zip, I couldn't just take in the sides.

So, I cut off the overlocked seams of the skirt front and bodice front, pinned the pieces on me so they fit, and sewed them again.

The waist still sits a bit funny, and I had to add pleats to the skirt, but overall, wearable.

Lastly, (after arguments with my gathering foot) I added the ruffle detail, bound the neck line and the coffee date dress was finished.

So, the lesson in this is go with your tried and true dress if it's just a basic dress with ornamentation. Add the details and you will be fine, and not have to do any of this fussy fitting. Especially when, like me, your measurements aren't all one size.

And I'm going to have to secure that lower ruffle down, becuase the way it sits out from my bust is a little silly looking.

I'm honestly not sure how much wear this dress is going to get. I love the colour, and the concept, I'm just not so thrilled with the outcome. I need to fix the ruffle, beucase it doesn't sit evenly at the centre front (conveniently hidden in the photo by my hair, but I can't really walk around with my hair over my shoulder all the time).

So, this is a dress that, for a little while at least, is going to be relegated to the 'I have to think about it' pile.

So, I think that I've taken longer than my prescribed 28 days to finish this challenge.

And you know what? I'm okay with that. Because even though it has taken me longer, I did finish it, I'm out of the weird rut I was in (well, not so weird, I know exactly why I was in the rut, I was just frustrated and didn't want to see anyone, or sew, or really do anything), and I had a successful weekend sewing.

So, without further ado, here is my final item. A navy blue 'swirl' skirt.

I picked this pattern up at an op shop for 50c, but I have a similar skirt in baby pink drill, and it's one of my favourite items of clothing - comfortable and swishy in all the right ways.

I got some navy stretch fabric - satin-y on one side, fairly matt on the other - from the op shop. It was 150cm wide, and about 2.5m long, which was perfect for this skirt. Because it uses a LOT of fabric. All the curves leave a lot of scrap fabric.

The zip went in really easily, which amazed me because I've never set a zip into a curve before.

I'm really pleased with how this one turned out. I've worn it several times since making it, even though it has to be ironed every time (and I really really hate ironing).

8 in 28 Item 6 and 7

So, while stalking pinterest (have I mentioned that my day job is incredibly quiet? And I don't have a whole lot to do? And I spend about three quarters of an average day surfing the web, reading blogs, and looking through pinterest posts? And, most excitingly, that I have quit, and only have 9 days left?! Well, yeah...) I came across these two skirts:

Both of which I thought were super cute, and I put them on my 'I must sew them' list.

Then, someone in my dance class turned up wearing something very similar. Which was kinda my final push to actually sewing one myself.

For the underskirt, I was originally going to sew something like this:

But then discovered I didn't have any suitable fabrics (I know, right? I have a huge fabric stash, and nothing suitable). So that got put on the back burner while I made the overskirt.

I used a doona (duvet, quilt) cover I purchased at an op shop (thrift store) a few months ago. I loved the pattern with the kinda-seersucker quality. I just wasn't sure what to do with it. It was perfect for this project though.

Both the overskirt and the underskirt are based off my simple A-Line skirt pattern (so easy and quick to do, and it only needs 4 measurements! My tutorial is here)

Isn't it pretty?

I was at a sewing shop picking up a darning foot for my machine, when I spotted some lace under their counter, and bought some. Turns out, it was exactly the right colours for my overskirt. I just didn't get enough of it.

So, I started the lace skirt as an underskirt, went out (to a different fabric store) and purchased much more (too much, but oh well, I now have plans for the extra lace), and sewed myself a lace skirt. And a bonus, it works both as an underskirt, and by itself!

Each of the layers of lace are different, and the bottom one has a green tint that picks up the green hue of the overskirt and the buttons.

What I've really been up to

I have been posting my 'taking stock' posts regularly, and while they are a great reference for me, I have a feeling that they are kinda boring for all of you. After all, they are just a list with no photos.

So, in a more interesting way, what have I really been up to?

Well, I have three garments sewn and ready to show you. They just need to be photographed. Which has been hard, because they weather here has been awful the last few weeks.

I have two garments about half done, which I want to show you really soon, but depends on when I get them finished - I'm making bound button holes for one of them, something I've never done before, so that may take a little while.

And lastly, I quit my job! An office job and I really don't get along. I'm not great with dealing with beauracracy, and boy, did my job have a lot of it. Don't get me wrong, the pay was nice, and I learnt a lot from it, but it wasn't the job for me. The weeks before I left, I would have to talk myself out of bed in the mornings. Something I recognise as neither healthy, nor a good sign. Thursday was the last day, and I saw a bunch of friends yesterday. One of them commented on how much happier I looked. And I feel happier, too.

Going along with the now lack of job, I start a fashion design course part time in two weeks! I'm scared and excited (the last time I actually studied anything like this, I was still at school - that's eight years ago now!) so I understand why I'm feeling like this.

Canberra, usually a fairly boring, white-bread, public-servant city, has been hosting an outdoor ice skating rink the last few weeks, and my friends and I went skating yesterday, which was fun. I had forgotten how much fun something like that - it was that kinda 'this is so lame it's looped back and is actually very cool' - can be. And not only was skating fun, my friends managed to get a few shots of me that actually look decent. I'm not a photogenic person, so it's fairly amazing when that happens.

Ice skating - and my pants left is half up because I forgot to roll it down after lacing the skate.
